The listening section of the PTE exam assesses your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. This section is crucial as it evaluates how well you can comprehend, interpret, and respond to spoken information, which is essential for academic, professional, and everyday communication.

A strong performance in this section demonstrates your proficiency in understanding different accents, speech rates, and the ability to extract key information from spoken content.

This is important not only for succeeding in the exam but also for effectively participating in academic lectures, professional meetings, and everyday conversations. Listening skills are integral to overall language proficiency, making this section a vital component of the PTE exam.

The listening section is 30 to 43 minutes long and includes eight different question types. You will listen to audio or video clips that begin playing automatically, and you will hear each clip only once. You are allowed to take notes during the test.

The question types include summarise spoken text, multiple choice (multiple answers), fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, multiple choice (single answer), select missing words, highlight incorrect words, and write from dictation.

Each task requires you to use different listening skills, such as summarising information, identifying correct answers, and filling in missing words, to evaluate your overall listening comprehension.

PTE Listening Exam Sections Format

The reading section of the PTE Academic test is designed to evaluate your reading skills across various task types. This section is allocated 29 to 30 minutes in total. Each task is included to assess different aspects of your reading ability and to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your reading skills.

  • The first task in this section is “Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks.” In this task, you’ll encounter a text with several gaps, and you’ll need to choose words from a dropdown menu to fill in these gaps. This task assesses your ability to understand context and select appropriate words. It does not have a specific time limit allocated.
  • The next task is “Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer,” where you’ll answer a multiple-choice question based on a passage. This task evaluates your ability to comprehend the content and tone of the text.
  • Following that is the “Re-order Paragraphs” task. Here, you’ll be presented with several text boxes that are in a random order, and you’ll need to arrange them in the correct sequence. This task tests your understanding of the logical structure of a text.
  • After that comes the “Multiple Choice, Single Answer” task, where you’ll answer a multiple-choice question with a single correct response based on a passage. This task assesses your ability to identify specific information and details within the text. It has a time allocation of about 2 minutes.

Overall, the reading section of the PTE Academic test aims to assess your skills in understanding context, identifying key information, organising information logically, and comprehending the content and tone of texts.

Each task provides a unique challenge that contributes to a comprehensive evaluation of your reading abilities within the allocated time frame.

PTE Listening Exam Common Challenges

1. Difficulty understanding different accents and speech speeds

Test takers often struggle to comprehend audio clips featuring various accents and speaking speeds, which can lead to confusion and inaccuracies in their responses.

To overcome this challenge, practice listening to a wide range of accents and speeds in English media like podcasts, movies, and news broadcasts.

2. Strategies for capturing key information and details from audio clips

Many find it challenging to effectively capture essential information and details from audio clips. Develop strategies such as active listening, note-taking, and focusing on keywords to improve comprehension and accuracy.

3. Distinguishing between similar-sounding words and phrases

The similarity in pronunciation of certain words and phrases can pose a challenge. Utilise context clues, pay attention to word stress and intonation, and listen for surrounding words to infer meaning.

4. Managing time

Time constraints can cause rushing through questions, leading to missed details. Practice with timed exercises to improve prioritisation and efficiency in answering questions.

5. Distractions and external noises

External noises or distractions can hinder concentration. Use noise-cancelling headphones and find a quiet study environment to minimise distractions during practice.

6. Complex instructions or multiple speakers

Tasks with complex instructions or multiple speakers can be challenging. Break down instructions, focus on key phrases, and actively listen for cues indicating changes in speakers or topics.

7. Identifying main ideas and supporting details

Extracting main ideas and details accurately is crucial. Develop summarization skills by focusing on the central theme and practising identifying key points while listening.

Effective PTE Listening Exam Strategies

1. Focus on Active Listening

Concentrate on the audio content without distractions, taking note of important details like names, numbers, and key ideas. Engage with the speaker by mentally questioning the topic to enhance understanding.

2. Improve listening comprehension and memory

Regularly listen to a variety of English accents and speech speeds to adapt to and understand different styles of communication. Use memory aids or visual imagery to remember key information from the audio clips.

3. Take Effective Notes

Develop a shorthand system that works for you to write down essential information quickly during audio clips. Focus on jotting down keywords, main ideas, and supporting details rather than trying to capture everything word-for-word.

4. Answer Questions Accurately

Pay close attention to question prompts and listen for specific information that directly addresses the question. Use the information provided in the audio clip to formulate precise and relevant answers.

5. Utilise Context Clues

Listen for contextual cues such as tone of voice, emphasis on certain words or phrases, and the overall flow of the conversation to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words or expressions within the audio.

6. Review and Practice

Regularly listen to a variety of audio materials, such as lectures, discussions, and interviews, to improve your listening comprehension across different topics and contexts. Practice listening without transcripts to simulate real test conditions.

7. Analyse Model Answers

Study model responses to understand how successful speakers structure their answers, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and effectively convey their thoughts and opinions in response to listening prompts.

8. Practice with Sample Tasks

Familiarise yourself with PTE listening tasks by practising with sample questions and tasks. Analyse model answers to understand the expectations and requirements for each task type, such as note completion, multiple-choice questions, and summarising spoken text.

PTE Listening Exam Practice Resources
